A transgender (or trans) person is someone whose gender identity is different from the sex they were assigned at birth.
A cisgender person is someone whose gender identity matches the sex they were assigned at birth.
Sex assigned at birth is the label a doctor gives a baby, usually based on their body.
Gender identity is a person's own inner sense of who they are: a woman, a man, both, neither, or something else.
Some trans people are women or men. Others are nonbinary, meaning their gender isn't only "woman" or "man". Every one of these identities is valid.
Transitioning is the process of living as who you really are. It looks different for everyone, and there's no single "right" way or finish line.
Nobody "has to" do any particular step to be trans. Someone is trans because of who they are, not because of what they've done to transition.
Pronouns are how we refer to someone: she/her, he/him, they/them and others. If you're not sure, just ask politely, or use the person's name.
Slipped up? Correct yourself, say sorry once, and move on. No big speech needed.

I'm trans, and proud of it. Coming out and living as myself hasn't always been easy, but it's one of the best things I've ever done. If you're questioning, you don't need all the answers today. Take your time, be gentle with yourself, and know that you're not alone.
